La International Football Associtation Board (IFAB) aprobó de forma unánime la utilización del sistema de videoarbitraje (VAR), que se aplicará en el próximo Mundial de Rusia, durante su 132º reunión anual general celebrada en la sede de la FIFA en Zúrich este sábado.

De esta manera, la Copa del Mundo de 2018, a jugarse entre el 14 de junio y el 15 de julio próximos, será la primera de la historia que contará con el sistema de Asistencia a los Arbitros por Video.

Este sistema tecnológico de ayuda, ya probado en varias competiciones desde 2016, se puede utilizar únicamente en cuatro casos: para validar o no un gol, atribuir o no una roja, conceder o no un penal, y corregir un error de identificación a un jugador sancionado.

La IFAB aseguró que su decisión "representa una nueva era para el fútbol" y que la utilización del VAR "ayudará a aumentar la integridad y la justicia en el juego", tras concluir la reunión, que estuvo presidida por el presidente de la FIFA, el suizo Gianni Infantino.

En Argentina, el videoarbitraje aún no ha sido implementado. Sí se utilizó en la Copa Libertadores, donde su participación en la semifinal del 2017 entre River y Lanús continúa generando polémica.

"The International Football Association Board unanimously approved the use of video assistant referees at its 132nd Annual general meeting," IFAB said in a statement.
